It was nearly two years ago, hours before the New York Yankees’
World Series opener against Philadelphia. As players prepared,
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman went up to his office and
telephoned a half-dozen of his counterparts, among them Detroit’s
Dave Dombrowski.
“I remember Dave saying, ‘Hey, what are you doing calling me?
Isn’t this Game 1 of the World Series? You’ve got a big game
tonight,’” Cashman recalled. “I was like, ‘Hey, I’m out of it. I
already messed this team up enough. Nothing more I can do. So now
I’ve got to talk about the 2010 team and how I can mess that one
up.’”
Fast forward 3 1/2 weeks.
Dombrowski was driving from Detroit to Chicago with his family
for a Thanksgiving visit with his parents. His cell phone rang, and
Arizona GM Josh Byrnes was on the line.
“He said he talked to Brian. There was the potential of a
three-way deal,” Dombrowski related. “Would we be open-minded to
it? And that sort of got that ball rolling.”
And so began the talks that led to an unusual seven-player trade
that helped build three division winners. Come this weekend, the
Yankees, Tigers and Diamondbacks all will be in the playoffs _
Detroit and New York playing each other.
Detroit sent All-Star center fielder Curtis Granderson to New
York, which dealt right-hander Ian Kennedy to Arizona, and lefty
reliever Phil Coke and outfield prospect Austin Jackson to the
Tigers. Detroit traded All-Star pitcher Edwin Jackson to the
Diamondbacks, and Arizona sent touted young pitchers Max Scherzer
and Daniel Schlereth to the Tigers.
Byrnes had called Cashman before contacting Dombrowski, feeling
out the Yankees GM on what he might be looking for. Then running
the Diamondbacks, and now San Diego’s senior vice president for
baseball operations, Byrnes returned from the GM meetings in
Chicago, gathered his aides and guessed New York was focused on
Granderson.
“We sat down as a staff and kind of played around with it on a
dry erase board and felt like the Yankees were the logical spot,”
Byrnes said. “We didn’t know that. We just thought about that.
Granderson was a logical fit. Obviously, they probably had to
assess that winter with (Johnny) Damon and (Brett) Gardner and some
other things, how they wanted their outfield to be.”
It took six weeks of talks from Cashman’s initial call until the
deal was finalized on Dec. 9. Word started to leak out the day
before, after the three GMs reached a tentative deal while meeting
in Cashman’s suite at the winter meetings in Indianapolis.
Granderson remembers where he was when he found out.
“I was shopping at a West Elm store in Chicago,” he said. “I
started getting text messages from my friends.”
He put up MVP-type numbers this year, with team-leading totals
of 41 homers and 119 RBIs. Austin Jackson, his replacement in the
Detroit outfield, had 10 homers and 45 RBIs, played above-average
defense and at age 24 has time to improve.
Scherzer (14-9) is tied for second on the Tigers in wins, Coke
is their No. 1 lefty out of the bullpen and also made spot starts,
and Schlereth (3.51 ERA) was a key relief component for
Detroit.
Edwin Jackson pitched a no-hitter for Arizona against Tampa Bay
in June last year, then was redealt a month later to the Chicago
White Sox in July 2010 for Daniel Hudson, who at 16-10 is second in
wins for the Diamondbacks this year.
Kennedy has become a star in Arizona, going 21-4 with a 2.88
ERA, a performance that could earn him the NL Cy Young Award. He
had impressed with the Yankees during three starts at the end of
the 2007 season, but he was out for much of 2008 with a strained
muscle near his right ribcage and bursitis in his right shoulder
blade. He pitched in just one big league game in 2009 because of
surgery to remove an aneurysm from beneath his right biceps. The
trade moved him a lot closer to his California home than the
Bronx.
“I always heard my name up in trades every single year, every
single offseason, so I didn’t really believe it at first,” Kennedy
said. “I didn’t know how to react. You don’t know whether to act
excited because you get to come to a new team, come to the West
Coast.”
As often is the case in baseball these days, money was a factor.
While the Yankees took on the contract of Granderson, who is making
$8.25 million, Detroit received four players whose salaries total
less than $1.9 million.
“For us, there are four guys on our ballclub that are all young
service guys,” Dombrowski said. “Scherzer after this year is still
three years away from free agency. Coke, same way with him.”
And young players got a chance for playing time, which rarely
happens with the Yankees.
“I think it worked out for the best, for the players and for the
teams,” Austin Jackson said. “I was excited to get the opportunity
and try to get my big league career started, but I was kind of sad
to leave a lot of my friends that I made over there.”
When Kennedy left the Yankees, he briefly allowed himself to
think ahead. At some point, whether by trade or free agency, there
could be pinstripes in his future.
“I told Cashman, ‘I know a lot of guys come back, and I know
this is a business, and I could end up with the Yankees another
day,’” Kennedy said. “He goes: ‘Yep, a lot of guys come back.’”

What do you guys think about this.
|
After a long flight, a predawn arrival and a workout that came all too soon, Derek Jeter is ready for the playoffs.
Almost. First, a good night’s sleep would be nice.
“Man, I got home at 4:30. I don’t even know what I’m saying right now,” a bleary-eyed Jeter said Thursday, a day before he and the New York Yankees face Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers in an A.L. division series opener. “It’s not fun yet.”
It’s about to be, though. Justin Verlander vs. CC Sabathia in Game 1 Friday night is about as good as postseason matchups get.
Verlander, who went 24-5 with a 2.40 ERA and 250 strikeouts, looms as one of the biggest first-round obstacles for the Yankees. Of course, the Yankees have an ace of their own in Sabathia, who goes against a Tigers’ lineup that carried Detroit to a 30-9 finish to the season.
Rays-Rangers: The Texas Rangers had to win their last six games in the regular season to earn home-field advantage in the first round of the playoffs this time.
Just to get into the postseason, Tampa Bay had to overcome a nine-game deficit in the final month and a seven-run deficit in the final game.
“Right now there’s nothing that we don’t think that we can’t do. … We believe,” Rays manager Joe Maddon said Thursday, a day before the opener of a rematch of last year’s A.L. division series.
A tired Rays team arrived Thursday at Rangers Ballpark.
Scrambling
for a rested starter, the Rays will turn to rookie Matt Moore in Game 1. The lefty, 22, was among baseball’s top prospects in the minors, and showed why last week in his first start in the majors — five scoreless innings at Yankee Stadium, with 11 strikeouts.
Moore has pitched only three times in the big leagues, for 91/3 innings. But he’ll have this advantage: Texas hitters have never faced him.
Attendance: Major League Baseball attendance rose by about half of 1 percent this year, ending three straight seasons of drops.
The Philadelphia Phillies led the attendance chart for the first time, drawing 3,680,718 fans. The overall attendance of 73,425,568 this year was the fifth-highest in MLB history, the 30 teams averaging 30,229, up from 30,067 last year. This year’s attendance remained nearly 8 percent below the record 32,785 set in 2007.
Clubs with the biggest percentage increases: Cleveland 31 percent to 22,726, Pittsburgh 22 percent to 24,255 and Texas 18 percent to 36,382.
Biggest drops: Tampa Bay 19 percent to 18,846, Los Angeles Dodgers 18 percent to 36,236 and Houston 11 percent to 25,546.
Indians: The club exercised its 2013 option on manager Manny Acta, who in his second season led Cleveland to a second-place finish in the A.L. Central.
Acta kept the Indians in contention for much of this season before the young club finished 15 games behind Detroit. A rash of injuries torpedoed a 30-15 start, but the Indians (80-82) still managed an 11-game improvement over Acta’s first season.
Marlins-White Sox: As part of the agreement that allowed the Florida Marlins to hire Ozzie Guillen as manager, the Chicago White Sox acquired right-hander Jhan Marinez and infielder Ozzie Martinez and sent minor league right-hander Ricardo Andres to the Marlins.
Guillen was released Monday from the final year of his White Sox contract and signed a four-year deal with the Marlins.
Padres: Hitting coach Randy Ready was fired, the only member of Bud Black’s staff not to be invited back for 2012. Ready is the fourth hitting coach to be fired since the Padres moved into spacious Petco Park in 2004.
Royals: Manager Ned Yost, shaking up his coaching staff, let go pitching coach Bob McClure and bench coach John Gibbons.
Leave any suggestions in the comment box.

It’s the Detroit Tigers who’ll face the Yankees in the American League Division Series starting Friday.
The Yankees had to wait until tonight’s games were finished to see who they’d play in the playoff series. If the AL West champion Texas Rangers finished the season with a one-game advantage over AL Central champion Tigers, Detroit would head to New York.
That happened tonight when the Rangers (96-66) beat the Los Angeles Angels, 3-1, and the Tigers (95-67) defeated the Cleveland Indians, 5-4.
Miguel Cabrera singled and doubled for Detroit tonight, all but wrapping up the AL batting title, and Jhonny Peralta hit a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning.
Cabrera entered the day hitting .343, five points ahead of Michael Young of Texas and Adrian Gonzalez of the Boston Red Sox. He raised his average another point against the Indians, making it almost impossible for the other two to catch him.
Peralta hit his 21st homer of the season off Vinnie Pestano (1-2) to give the Tigers the lead after Ryan Perry (2-0) allowed Cleveland to tie it at 4 in the top of the eighth.

What you might not know about the AL Central champions
1. Jim Leyland has led six teams to the postseason — three times with the Barry Bonds/Bobby Bonilla Pirates, once with the Gary Sheffield/Kevin Brown/Al Leiter Marlins and now twice with the Tigers. Those teams have posted a combined 27-22 record, including a 3-1 ALDS victory against the Yankees in the 2006 postseason.
2. Tigers starters had 72 wins this season — 24 of which came from Justin Verlander (24-5, 2.40 ERA). The 2006 rotation that led the Tigers to the World Series had 75 victories. Verlander could become just the fourth pitcher in the past 30 seasons to win the Cy Young and AL MVP awards. The others were Dennis Eckersley (1992, A’s), Roger Clemens (1986, Red Sox) and Willie Hernandez (1984, Tigers).
3. The Tigers closed exceptionally well. Detroit won 20 of its final 26 games to pull away in the AL Central. In fact, the Tigers were 16-2 against division foes during the season’s final month.
